Working on the construction site? It's best to keep these basic rules in mind.

On the construction site, you need to stay alert. There are running machines, scattered materials, and colleagues who rely on you. That’s why it’s important to know the rules. This way, you’ll work not only more safely but also with greater confidence. That’s why we’ve listed the most important rules for you—so you can stand strong every day, both literally and figuratively.

1. Wear your PPE

PPE, or Personal Protective Equipment, is not optional. It helps protect you from hazards on the job site.

  1. Safety helmet: Mandatory where indicated. Protects your head from falling objects.
  2. Safety shoes: With steel toes or puncture-resistant soles to protect your feet from sharp objects like nails or glass.
  3. Work gloves: For cutting tasks, heat, or chemicals.
  4. Hearing protection: Required when noise exceeds 80 dB—think drilling. Use ear muffs or ear plugs.
  5. Safety glasses: Protect against dust or flying particles, especially when drilling, grinding, or chipping.
  6. Dust mask: Wear one if there is fine dust or hazardous substances in the air.
  7. Fall protection: When working at height, use a safety harness, lifeline, or guardrail.
  8. Other protective clothing: Depending on the job, you may need to wear additional protective gear, such as reflective vests or cut-resistant clothing.

2. What about training?

You may only work on the site if you have completed a basic safety training. Unless you can prove that, in the past ten years, you have gained at least five years of experience on temporary or mobile construction sites.

Do you have a valid VCA certificate? Then you are usually exempt from this training. But pay close attention to the date:

  1. VCA training after 15 April 2023? Then you must have completed the training (at least 8 hours) and passed the exam.
  2. VCA training before 15 April 2023? Then just having completed the training is sufficient.

Simply passing the exam, without having attended the training? That is not enough for an exemption.

3. Keep your surroundings safe

A tidy site is a safe site. A loose plank, a forgotten cable, or an open pit can cause an accident more quickly than you think. Make sure walkways are clear, hazards are properly covered, and tidy up materials when you’re done with them.

See something dangerous or a near miss? Report it to your site manager and your colleagues. This helps keep everyone extra safe!

4. Be mindful of the weather

The weather on the site can change quickly. Dry in the morning, then a downpour at noon or suddenly blazing sun. That’s why it’s important to always be prepared for different weather conditions.

Wear appropriate work clothing and keep spare clothes in your locker. Consider a raincoat, sturdy waterproof shoes to prevent slipping, thermal underwear for cold weather, or light, breathable fabrics when it’s warm. That way, you’ll stay comfortable and safe on the job.

5. Know what you’re working with

Need to use machines or tools? Only do so if you know what you’re doing and if the equipment has been approved. Always follow the instructions, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re unsure. Some equipment may only be used if you have received proper training or certification. If you don’t have it, don’t use it.

6. Know the emergency procedures

Unexpected things can always happen on site. Make sure you know in advance where the emergency exits are, where the nearest fire extinguisher is located, and who is on duty for first aid.

In emergencies, every second counts. You must be able to act immediately. Always follow the procedures that apply during an evacuation or accident.

7. Take your breaks

Fatigue also carries risks. Your concentration drops, your reaction time slows, and small mistakes can have serious consequences. Take regular breaks. Taking a moment to rest helps you stay sharp and safe.
